Abortion has been a topic of much concern. There are people who are against women getting abortions also known as prolife. Then there are those who believe women are more than capable of making the decision for themselves also known as prochoice. Those who are prolife believe that every life is sacred and should not be stripped away. People who are prochoice understand that there may be circumstances where abortion may be a better option than letting the child be born into a world where it will not receive the care it needs. Although the issue with abortion not about the morals, but how women have little to no control over the decision to get an abortion. This issue brings us back to intersectionalism. To those who do not know intersectionalism is the study of forms of oppression or discrimination. Intersectionality affects many categories such as gender, race, sexual orientation, religion and many others. When it comes to the oppression and discrimination of gender, in terms of women, it must be taken into consideration that women are not only discriminated by their gender but also the other categories of intersectionality. In an article “State Facts About Abortion: Ohio,” it states, “a woman must receive state-directed counseling that includes information designed to discourage her from having an abortion and then wait 24 hours before the procedure is provided. Counseling must be provided in person and must take place before the waiting period begins, thereby necessitating two separate trips to the facility.”(Guttmacher) This is one way how women do not have much of a choice of what they can do with their own bodies. In another article I read “How anti-abortion ‘Heartbeat Bill’ passed Ohio House,” which is an article on the legalities of abortion. This article shows how politicians can dictate what liberties a women can have (Thompson). In my opinion I don’t believe any one person should be in charge or make any decisions about another person’s body. We all have free will and should be treated as equals. I also read the article “This Lawmaker Publicly Discussed Her Rape and Abortion. And Some Dude Laughed,” Teresa Fedor revealed that she had been the victim of a rape and had to get an abortion (Oh). As she was telling her story she realized that a man in the audience was laughing. This proves that there are people who have no respect towards women and believe they have no rights.
